According to the Chinese Zodiac Calendar, it is technically the Year of the Horse but we like to march to the beat of our own drum here. While we definitely have our company goals but I thought I would share my own. Instead of writing new goals, I thought it would be just as useful to reflect on last year's goal, which will also be this year's goals:
1. Be the best husband possible. You got to ask my better half if I achieved that.... I think I did (but most husbands do as well)
2. Be the best dad possible. I feel like I got this one on lockdown.
3. Wake up every day and do exactly what you want. It took me until November to quit my day job and focus on my dream. Although it didn't feel that way while I was working my day job, honestly, each day I was dying a little inside. Now, I wake up each morning with more energy and passion for life everyday, it feels damn good to never need an alarm clock again.
4. Inspire others. I tried to do this with my words and guidance (not that my word and/or guidance is worth much) but have found that leading by example is more effective. I had potentially one of the worst/riskiest/silliest start up ideas, an extremely time-consuming and challenging day job, and a new born baby when I started VapeXhale. If I can do it, anyone can, in the words of Maria Kang "What's your excuse?"
In my quest to understand the meaning of life, I think I have part of the code cracked to have a fulfilling year and life:
A) Find something you like to do in your spare time and figure out a way to make a living doing that.
B) Understand the difference between "success" and "happiness" - people often confuse the two and chase pipe dreams their entire life and once they achieve it, they realize that they were chasing the wrong thing this whole time. Don't be one of those people who have their definition of a successful life shaped by US Magazine
C) Help others. Not sure if this is how other's feel but I feel way more satisfaction seeing something good happen to someone that deserves it than when something good happens for me.
D) I'm stealing this last one from Steven Pressfield but "be a pro" - If you have a dream or goal, you must do something each and every day to get one step closer to that dream. Life is complicated, life is tough, life has many obligations and all those things are distractions from you achieving your dream. Don't let those things become excuses for why yet another year passed by and you aren't closer to living your dream. Be a pro every fuckin day and the CEO of your own life. Take control and make 2014 your breakthru year, I'm pulling for everyone!
